Kolkata to get city anthem

Kolkata, July 26 : The City of Joy - Kolkata is all set to get its first anthem through a unique collaboration of people from different genres brought forward by ace sitar player Purbayan Chatterjee, a recipient of President of India Award for best instrumentalist and also recipient of Aditya Vikram Birla Award.


The project has witnessed the unification of the whole of the music fraternity in creating a better Kolkata and to promote the city as the best metropolis analogous to other big cities like New York and Paris.

Veteran and venerable people like Ustad Rashid Khan, Rupam Islam, Rupankar, Lopamudra Mitra, Pt. Anindo Banerjee, Pt. Subhankar Banerjee and lyricist Srijato met on Thursday for the recording of the song at Prasad Studio.

The song 'Chai Bole Banchi' has been composed into other languages like English, Bengali and Hindi as well.

Percussionist Bickram Ghosh has written the English Lyrics and the Hindi and Bengali words have been by Srijato.

Music Industry heavyweights like Usha Uthup, Ustad Rashid Khan, Pandit Ajay Chakraborty, Bickram Ghosh, Raghab Chatterjee, Rupankar and many more have contributed to the voices.

The music video will feature personalities like Aparna Sen, Sourav Ganguly, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Bhaichung Bhutia etc., and the likes.

People can also participate in this project by participating in the outgoing online campaign for the anthem where they have to send their video to support the venture. The footage will be used in the final Music design.



Scheduled to release in August the song has been aided by Konnect Kolkata which is a trust for preserving the cultural milieu of the city.

For ensuring the wide spreading of the song social networking and media will play a leading role along with other electronic and print media channels.

People who are really attached to the city will be invited to participate in making the anthem for the city and 30 second duration teasers will be produced to support the campaigning.

The creator of this innovative project, Purbayan Chatterjee said, "I am immensely grateful to the musicians and artists who took time off from their busy schedule and supported my venture. Kolkata is a great place for art."

"I want the youth of Kolkata to connect with the lyrics and take pride in being a citizen of the only city in India with a customized anthem. I would like to extend my gratitude to the young talent who supported us to make the initiative a success," Chatterjee added.

Lead singer of Bengali rock band Fossils Rupam Islam said, "This is a collaborative effort and this has helped the musicians in noting others ,and learning from the different approaches that different musicians have."

Singer Lopamudra Mitra had the view that there is an urgent need to do something from Kolkata and the world should know about Kolkata.

Besides she praised Purbayan Chatterjee for the beautiful song.

"Kolkata is my heart. I have been staying here from childhood. I will never leave Kolkata. This project has a different soundscape. Purbayan is doing good," said Ustad Rashid Khan.

Pt. Anindo Chatterjee praised Srijato for the lyrics and also praised the accompaniment of the song.
