Vespa ranked among best designs in 100 yrs
On the occasion of World International Design Day 2013, a research survey by CNN ranked Vespa as one of the most iconic industrial designs from the last 100 years.
CNN associated with 12 international authorities renowned in the field of design to identify ideas that have marked the most significant and successful industrial creativity in the last 100 years.
Addressing this fascinating subject were names such as American Dick Powell, co-founder of the design agency Seymour Powell, the Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde, the Welsh industrial designer Ross Lovegrove, the Japanese designer Yoshiro Nakamatsu, the Italian Gianfranco Zaccai co-founder and chief designer officer of Continuum, Deyan Sudjic, director of London's Design Museum, Professor Miles Pennington, head of design innovation at the Royal College of Art in London.
"Used in Fellini's "La Dolce Vita" and loved by the Beatles, the Vespa has had a profound impact on culture, productivity and society", celebrated visionary Italian designer Zaccai said.
Vespa's companions in the gallery of the magnificent twelve are fellow historic legends such as the Apple Mac computer in 1984, the Bang and Olufsen 2400, stereo system in 1979, the Airbus 380 large passenger plane, the escalator, the first jet engine amongst others.
The Vespa's revolutionary concept born by placing the human figure at the core of creativity placed Vespa in the Olympus of industrial design. Furthermore, its unisex design aspect fetched it the title as the Vespa can be driven with elegance by both finely dressed men as well as women.
Commenting on the occasion, Ravi Chopra, Chairman and Managing Director, Piaggio Vehicles Private Limited (India), said, "We are thrilled to announce Vespa's nomination as one of the twelve best designs by CNN and these celebrated global designers; especially since the research reveals legendary names in the design space worldwide."
Its classic design and features resembling a 'wasp' has catalyzed Vespa's much revered journey. The Vespa revolution began in 1946 as founder Enrico Piaggio mimed the famous words, "Semra una Vespa!" meaning "It resembles a wasp!" Over the years, Vespa has grown from being just a scooter to a lifestyle brand and won the hearts of over 17 million loyalists globally. This masterpiece has successfully maintained it's positioning as a timeless and ageless lifestyle classic that leverages its rich heritage and unique values to appeal to the finer emotions of the consumer.
Piaggio Vehicles Private Limited (PVPL) is a 100pc subsidiary of Piaggio and C S.p.A of Italy, which is one of the global leaders in two-wheelers.
