Ex-Odisha minister arrested in dowry case
Former Odisha Law Minister Raghunath Mohanty, who was accused of harassing his daughter-in-law for dowry, has been arrested from Kolkata, said reports.
The former minister, after resigning from his post, was evading law for the last two weeks. His wife has been arrested as well on charges of dowry torture on the daughter-in-law.
Earlier on Mar 16, Raja Mohanty, the son of Odisha's former Law Minister was arrested on charges of dowry torture on his wife.
The complaint of dowry harassment and torture was filed by Mohanty's daughter-in-law Barsha against the family.
Mohanty then had to resign after police filed a dowry case against him..
In her police complaint on Thursday night, Mohanty's daughter-in-law has alleged that the minister and his family in Balasore were demanding a dowry of Rs.25 lakh in cash and a Scorpio car.
The woman married Mohanty's son Raja in June last year. She has reportedly alleged that her in-laws were given a sum of Rs.10 lakh in cash and jewellery as dowry at the time of their marriage.
Following his daughter-in-law's complaint, Mohanty met Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday morning and said he was resigning from his posts on moral grounds.
Besides holding the portfolio of law, he held the urban development and information technology portfolios as well.
