Security forces apprehended three rhino poachers in Assam's Sonitpur district on Friday, officials said.

The apprehended poachers have confessed that they were involved in recent rhino killings at Kaziranga National Park (KNP).

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of police and forest officials launched a search operation at Bihali area in the district and nabbed the rhino poachers.

The arrested poachers were identified as Deben Hazarika, Pranab Baruah and Lakhideb Saikia.

"The poachers were involved in recent rhino killings in KNP," a forest official said.

So far this year, 19 one-horned rhinos were poached at KNP.

On Mar 27, poachers killed two rhinos at Rongajaan area near Biswanathghat in Sonitpur district and Bagori forest range under KNP.

Poachers managed to flee with the horns after killing the rhinos.

Recently, the rhino census report said 2329 rhinos were found in KNP, a rise in number by 39 from 2290 in 2012.
