Liyaqat name in militant rehab list: Report

Srinagar, Mar 27 : Amid a row over the arrest of alleged terrorist Sayyed Liyaqat Shah, documents possessed by the Jammu and Kashmir government and central agencies revealed Liyaqat as one of the 200 individuals, who had sought to return from Pakistan under the state's rehabilitation policy for surrendered militants, said reports.

According to an NDTV report, Liyaquat Shah's name appears as 51st on the list of 223 people cleared under the amnesty scheme.

The National Investigation Agency, which has been shouldered the onus of probing his case has now been tasked with determining his real identity.

The central government had already said it will work with state governments to make the surrender policy work better, by chalking out a larger policy framework.

Shah's arrest has triggered a controversy with the Jammu and Kashmir Police claiming that they knew about the militant's return to India from Pakistan via Nepal.

Negating the claims made by the Delhi Police, the Jammu and Kashmir Police had reportedly said that Shah was returning to Kashmir to surrender.

The Delhi Police, however, stuck to its version which claims Shah to be a part of a group sent by Pakistan to launch terror attacks in India's national capital New Delhi around Holi to avenge the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

"There are no loopholes. We had developed the intelligence on our own," Neeraj Kumar, the chief of the Delhi Police, defending the arrest, was quoted as saying.
