Want probe in rural job scheme in Bengal: Congress

Kolkata, March 26 : West Bengal's opposition Congress Tuesday said it has asked the union government to initiate a probe into the improper utilisation of rural employment guarantee funds in the state.

"We have information that the money (NREGS fund) is not being properly utilised. so I have lodged a complaint with union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh, to make some arrangements so that proper investigation can be initiated," state Congress president Pradip Bhattacharya told a media meet here.

"Our party workers regularly complain that the ruling Trinamool Congress is going the CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist) way in the matters of 100 days work. The state government is wasting the money (NREGS funds) in the name of monitoring, which is being funded by the union government."

Bhattacharya said he has asked Ramesh to look into the district-wise allocation and see where the funds were being misappropriated.

"In many cases it is being said that these schemes are of the state government and the union government is being denied credit," he alleged.

"I hope the union government will take necessary steps in this regard," he said.

The state Congress chief alleged farmers in the state were not getting the support price for paddy leading to an economic crisis. He said the Congress has hit the streets on the issue and protested before administrative offices in the districts.
