Akali Dal-BJP sweep Punjab rural polls
The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) combine swept the zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections in Punjab, the state election commission announced Wednesday.
The Akali Dal-BJP combine won 297 zila parishad seats out of the 329 whose result were declared, an official said.
The main opposition Congress won 26, while others won six seats, he said.
Out of the total 2,731 panchayat samiti seats, results of 2,729 have been declared. The Akali Dal-BJP combine won 2,122 seats, while the Congress won 454. Others got 153 seats, said a commission spokesman.
The elections were held May 19 and the results were declared Wednesday. A total of 760 candidates were in the fray for the zila parishad elections while 5,786 candidates contested the panchayat samiti polls.
Thirty candidates for zila parishads and 229 for panchayat samitis were elected unopposed, he added.
The Akali Dal said the party's victory was the "people's mandate" on good governance of the Akali Dal-BJP government. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said the Congress should accept the defeat with humility.
The opposition Congress slammed the Akali Dal-BJP government for allegedly misusing its resources to win the election.
