Greg Matthews backs 'lead singer' Lyon to be key part of 'dynamic' Oz pace attack in Ashes

Sydney, Mar 26 : Former Test off-spinner Greg Matthews had praised the fight shown by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon during the India tour, saying that Lyon will be an important part of Australia's quest to win back the July Ashes in England.

According to Matthews, Lyon, who was entrusted by retired Test player Michael Hussey to lead the team song, had earned the honour through his fighting quality which he had shown in India, even though the hosts had drubbed Australia 4-0 in the Border-Gavaskar series, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Matthews, who played 33 Tests for Australia and took 61 wickets, said that Lyon's statistics of 76 wickets at an average of 33.18 in just 22 Tests proved he was the best spinner in the country, adding that the spinner is yet to show his best performance.

However, Matthews further said that Lyon still has to improve in many areas of the game, although he added that Lyon will be an important part of the dynamic fast-bowling pace attack by the Australian team during the Ashes which, he claimed, suited English pitches.

Lyon, who was the country's leading wicket-taker with 15 in Australia's 4-0 drubbing in India despite getting dropped for the second Test, almost single-handedly kept the visitors in the fourth Test by taking 7-94 after Australia only scored 262 in the first innings, the report added.
