No guarantee of Twenty20 World Cup in Bangladesh: Boon

Melbourne, Jan 10 : ICC match referee and former Australian Test great David Boon has said that there is no guarantee of the Twenty20 World Cup taking place in Bangladesh as planned.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board's officials are tightlipped over holding the tournament, hoping the situation to improve after the January 5 elections. The T20 World Cup will be held in March and April, but there has been a wave of violence that has raised concerns over player and official safety

Several cricket playing nations along with Cricket Australia have made it clear that they would take their governments advice on security in Bangladesh before deciding to play the T20 World Cup.

Boon, who has been appointed to officiate in Bangladesh during the upcoming World Cup, said he is not clear about the tournament being held as planned in Bangladesh, as the safety of players and administrators would be of paramount importance.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has also reportedly refrained from confirming their scheduled tour of Bangladesh, where they are set to play two Tests, two Twenty20s and three ODIs, starting from January 27.

The two boards met in Dubai on Thursday, on the sidelines of the ICC meeting.

SLC President Jayantha Dharmadasa said that a two-member delegation would visit Bangladesh on January 13 to assess the security situation before confirming their scheduled tour.

The report mentioned that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had also planned to raise security concerns over the Asia Cup and ICC World Twenty20 on the sidelines of the meeting.
