Subdue Modi rally preparations, BJP legislator tells party

Panaji, Jan 10 : A BJP legislator here has taken on his own party for going overboard with preparations for a rally of its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, even after Goa's building crash Jan 5, which killed at least 25 people.

St. Andre legislator Vishnu Wagh said his party should be more circumspect.

A sloppily constructed five-storeyed building at Canacona, 80 km from here, collapsed Jan 5. The rescue teams till late Thursday night were searching through the debris to find out if any bodies were buried.

"I am disappointed about the manner in which my party is going about with the preparations for the meeting despite so many deaths in the building collapse tragedy. They should tone down the celebrations a bit," Wagh told reporters here.

The Bharatiya Janata Party state unit has pulled out all stops for Modi who is scheduled to address the public rally in Merces, on the outskirts of Panaji, one of 100 such meetings planned throughout India, ahead of 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Commenting on Wagh's objection, senior BJP leader Laxmikant Parsenkar told IANS the party was saddened by the tragedy, but the rally was a different event altogether.
