The boy has reportedly been trapped inside in the pit for over 48 hours.
The army and police are digging a tunnel through a well, which was close to the pit and hope to rescue the child.
"The borewell has been dug till the depth of 40 feet. There were many rocks in the way, so they had to be broken too. The effort is on and the people have been working continuously day in and day out. We are hoping that by late evening we will be able to reach 45 feet," said Superintendent of Police, Rahul Kotoki.
A camera connected to a closed circuit television was lowered into the pit to locate the boy, who is said to be trapped at a depth of 50 feet, and to see if he was breathing normally.
The possibility of the child having been drowned in the water body has not been ruled out.
The child fell in a pit, situated inside a farm, on Monday afternoon while playing with other children.
Children informed the boy's parents and others who gathered around the borewell and called for help.
The authorities reached the spot and started digging the borewell as soon as they received the information.
According to reports, the total depth of the borewell is said to be around 345-feet and water table is at the depth of 200 feet.
