A militant was killed in a 6-hour-long gun-battle with security forces at Awantipora town of Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday evening, said reports on Wednesday.

Sources said on Tuesday night militants carried out an attack on an Indian Army convoy. After that, the Army and state police launched a search operation and killed one militant, who was identified as Wasim Ahmad of Dogripora, Awantipora.

Army PRO Srinagar Lt Col N N Joshi confirmed that one militant was killed in the night-long gun-battle.

"We also recovered one AK-56 from the slain militant's possession," said Joshi.

According to reports, Wasim was affiliated with local militant organization Hizbul Mujahideen and was active in the area for several years.

Pertinently, this encounter raged hours after the Sopore encounter where militants on Tuesday killed Special Operations Group (SOG) assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Kafeel Ahmad, and injured three other police personnel.
