Goa building: Death toll rises to 19

By John Edwards, Panaji, Jan 8 : The death toll from the building crash in Chaudi village of Goa's Canacona has rise to 19 after the rescuers recovered one more body late Tuesday night.

The chances of survivors are bleak, according to the state administration as it has already been five days since the under constructed building collapsed on nearly 50 labourers present in it.

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that the rescuing agencies as well as experts in disaster management have certified that there is no possibility of any survivors.

The three adjacent buildings which developed large cracks and tilted during the rescue operation will be razed this afternoon. The government has already requisitioned heavy machinery from Pune for this purpose.

Meanwhile, a team of Goa Police is in Mumbai to trace the builders Jaideep Saigal and Pradeep Singh Birring, who are on the run since the fatal accident.

The two along with a local contractor Vishwas Desai have been booked for culpable homicide and other serious offenses.

Desai has moved a local court seeking anticipatory bail.
