J&K: Militants open fire on Army patrol party

By Saleem Iqbal Qadri, Srinagar, Jan 7 : The Indian Army said that militants opened fire on an Army patrolling party at Awantipora, 34 kms from Srinagar city, in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.

Sources said that the Army party of 55 RR was on patrolling near Railway Track Baighpora Awantipora of South Kashmir when it was attacked.

Soon after the incident, the police, the CRPF and the Army launched search operation in the adjoining areas to track down the attackers.

Lt Col NN Joshi PRO (Defence), Srinagar said, "Militants fired on our patrolling party in the evening and fled from the spot."

He said that the whole area has been cordoned off to track down the militants in the area.

No loss of life was reported so far.

Earlier on Tuesday morning, one ASI Kafeel Ahmad was killed and three other policemen were seriously injured in a three hour long gun battle which raged in Chankhan Sopore of North Kashmir.
