ISRO to launch GSLV-D5 satellite today

Chennai, Jan 5 : Countdown for the launch of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-D5) carrying communication satellite GSAT-14, is currently under progress at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh as the satellite is scheduled to lift off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at 4:18 pm on Sunday.

It is very crucial for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to achieve success specially after two back-to-back failures of the GSLV flights in 2010.

The ISRO informed that the preparations for propellant filling operation of GSLV-D5 Cryo Stage is under progress on Sunday while it gears up to lift off.

On August 19 last year, the ISRO's next GSLV flight, with an indigenous cryogenic engine, was called off 75 minutes before lift-off as the liquid fuel from the rocket's second stage had leaked, wetting the first stage and the four strap-on boosters around it.

India's maiden Mission to Mars was launched on Nov 5 from Sriharikota in southern state of Andhra Pradesh.

The PSLV carrying 'Mangalyaan' blasted off with an orbiter craft designed to orbit Mars in an elliptical orbit.

The mission has been framed to explore surface features of Mars, morphology, mineralogy and Martian atmosphere by indigenous scientific instruments.
