Steve Smith's ton gives Oz control on day one of fifth Ashes Test

Sydney, Jan 3 : Australia has ended the first day of the fifth and final Ashes Test in Sydney with another commanding performance with the bat despite initial trouble, boosted by a century from all-rounder Steve Smith.

At stumps on day one, England is trailing by 318 runs with nine wickets remaining in the first innings.

Smith's 115 before his wicket was taken by Ben Stokes, and Brad Haddin's 75 bailed out the Australian top-order after an initial troublesome spell with the bat.

Meanwhile, England was sent on the back foot once again with the early wicket of Michael Carberry in their first innings.
