Jammu and Kashmir: Rail and air services restored

By Saleem Iqbal Qadri, Srinagar, Jan 1 : Heavy snowfall in Kashmir valley for the second consecutive day led to continuous closure of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on the road.

The vehicular traffic remained suspended on the highway due to heavy snowfall around Jawahar Tunnel and landslides in the Panthal area, official sources said adding that no vehicle was allowed to ply on the highway.

A senior traffic police official said that the efforts were on to make the highway through and that it may be reopened for vehicular traffic on Thursday provided the weather remains pleasant.

Meanwhile, visibility at Srinagar airport improved leading to restoring of air traffic. However, Srinagar-Leh flight was cancelled due to bad weather, while other flights operated normally.

Later in a day rail service was also resumed from Baramulla, Qazigund and Banihal areas.

An official of the Srinagar Meteorological Department said that the rain and snowfall might continue at isolated places across the Jammu and Kashmir valley.
