Legendary Hollywood actors now on wine barrels in Spain
Images of legendary Hollywood actors like Charlie Chaplin, Clint Eastwood and Bruce Lee and scenes from movies like "Terminator 2", "Taxi Driver" and "Pulp Fiction" are now being hand-painted in Spain on barrels of vintage wine as part of the Laovejabala project being promoted by Spanish graphic designers Raul San Cristobal and Enrique Martin.
It provides a new claim to fame for casks of fine Rioja wines, which statistics say have the largest number of barrels in the world at close to 1.3 million.
The Bodegas Contador winery, in San Vicente de la Sonsierra town, is the first setting for this project.
The artists travel daily to the municipality of Samaniego where they hand-paint the barrels.
"Painting on a curved surface rather than on a flat one brings its own difficulties, but also gives value-added to the product, in this case a barrel, whose attractive shape lends itself to this technique," said San Cristobal, who has set a final sales price of between 1,000 and 1,200 euros ($1,520 and $1,660) on his artworks.
The exhibition installed at the Bodegas Contador winery now has 10 barrels illustrated with movie themes, including a scene from the film "Pale Rider", starring and directed by Clint Eastwood, of whom the head of the winery, Benjamin Romeo, is a big fan.
