Kolkata rape victim dies

Kolkata, Jan 1 : A 16-year-old gangrape victim, who had set herself on fire died in a Kolkata hospital, triggering a battle between her father and the police over her body amid protests over her death, reports said on Wednesday.

The girl died at a hospital in Kolkata on Tuesday.

The victim, who was a resident of Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district, was allegedly gangraped by same men twice in October.

She set herself on fire on Dec 23, reports said.

The girl's father, who is a Left affiliated Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) member, wanted her daughter to be cremated after her body was carried in a protest procession here.

The police reportedly put up barricades at a city crematorium when the CITU members tried to take it to their office.

"The girl's family alleges that when the body was being taken to a mortuary on Tuesday evening, cops intercepted the hearse and forced it to drive to the cremation ground," NDTV reported.

"They alleged that the policemen tried to cremate the body, but could not as they did not have the death certificate," said the news channel.

The body was later returned to the family.

The girl's family has demanded death sentence for the culprits.
