Will name PM candidate at proper time: Manish Tewari

New Delhi, Dec 31 : Congress leader and Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari on Tuesday said the party will announce the name of its prime ministerial candidate for 2014 Lok Sabha elections at an appropriate time.

"The Congress president (Sonia Gandhi) has already said that the decision on PM candidate will be taken at an appropriate time and the media will eventually be informed," Tewari said.

He said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will not resign from his post before the Lok Sabha elections and complete his term.

"All the speculations are baseless. The PM himself will address a press conference, take questions and put all speculations to rest," he said.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on Tuesday clarified that Manmohan Singh will not step down from his chair before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Meanwhile, main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded for early polls saying the present Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government is "non functional."

"There is no government in the country. There needs to be general elections as soon as possible to improve the economic situation," said senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha.

"The situation of PM is worse than that of a caretaker government," he said.

The PM will address a press conference on Jan 3.

It will be his first official press conference in nearly five years.

"The press conference is likely to set the tone for the Congress election agenda in 2014. Manmohan Singh will defend his tenure as the Prime Minister and lay the roadmap for the Lok Sabha elections which promises to be a very tough battle with a resurgent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) going all out to paint his regime as highly corrupt and inefficient," reported CNN-IBN on Tuesday.
