PM won't step down; BJP for early polls

New Delhi, Dec 31 : The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on Tuesday clarified that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will not step down from his chair before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.


Meanwhile, main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded for early polls saying the present Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government is "non functional."

"There is no government in the country. There needs to be general elections as soon as possible to improve the economic situation," said senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha.

"The situation of PM is worse than that of a caretaker government," he said.

The PM will address a press conference on Jan 3.

It will be his first official press conference in nearly five years.

"The press conference is likely to set the tone for the Congress election agenda in 2014. Manmohan Singh will defend his tenure as the Prime Minister and lay the roadmap for the Lok Sabha elections which promises to be a very tough battle with a resurgent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) going all out to paint his regime as highly corrupt and inefficient," reported CNN-IBN on Tuesday.
