New Delhi, Dec 30 : Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal on Monday announced a Rs one crore compensation to the wife of a Delhi Police constable who was allegedly beaten to death by suspected liquor mafia in Ghitorni area of South Delhi last week.

Kejriwal, who did not attend office on Monday due to his ill health, wrote a letter to the constable's wife, apologising for not being able to visit her.

In his letter, Kejriwal wrote: "The Delhi government, honouring your husband's martyrdom, is offering you Rs. 1 crore as a mark of respect. The Delhi government and I are determined to help you and your family in every possible way."

The deceased cop, Vinod Kumar, was beaten to death by the assailants on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, when he accompanied a team of excise department officials during a raid in Ghitorni.

Kumar was on deputation with the Excise Department of Delhi government.

The AAP in its election manifesto for the Delhi elections had promised that if voted to power, it would award a compensation of one-crore rupees for officials who died during duty.

AAP supremo Kejriwal took oath as the seventh chief minister of Delhi on Saturday and had then transferred Chief of Delhi Jal Board.
