Andhra train ire: Toll rises to 26

Hyderabad, Dec 28 : At least 26 people were killed when an AC coach of the Bangalore-Nanded Express train caught fire early Saturday near Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, reports said.

At least eight people have been left injured after the accident occurred.

The train was on its way from Karnataka's Bangalore city to Nanded in Maharashtra when it caught fire at around 3.15 am.

The fire was reportedly caused by a faulty air-conditioning system.

However, the driver managed to detach the burning coach from the rest of the train.

According to reports, there were about 67 passengers in the B1 compartment of the train.

Many passengers died as they were trapped and suffocated after the doors of the coach failed to open.

Railway Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge has announced ex-gratia payment of Rs.5 lakh to the kin of those killed in the fire.
