Jiwanjot leads Punjab's fight against Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 23 : Jiwanjot Singh struck his second ton of the Ranji Trophy season and helped Punjab gain the upper hand over Delhi on day two of their Group A match at the Roshanara Ground here Monday.


Jiwanjot (105 not out off 168 balls) took his team to 177 for three in the second innings after Punjab bowlers limited Delhi to 150 in their first innings. Punjab had a forgettable opening day when they were bundled out for 74 on what has proved to be a challenging surface for the batsmen.

Yuvraj Singh once again failed for Punjab, falling leg before wicket to Rajat Bhatia.

Earlier Monday, Virender Sehwag was run out after scoring 10 before Delhi innings ended in 45.1 overs.

In Bangalore, Group A toppers Karnataka and Mumbai were locked in a tense battle for first innings lead as the visitors, after restricting the hosts to 251, were 217 for seven at stumps.

Overnight 228 for seven, Karnataka stretched their innings with Lokesh Rahul adding a further 13 runs to finish with 133 while seamer Shardul Thakur came away with four for 65.

In reply, Mumbai were reduced to 99 for five after paceman HS Sharath grabbed three top order wickets. However, the visitors battled on as Hiken Shah contributed 44, before Siddhesh Lad (59 not out) and Javed Khan (33 not out) added 56 runs for the unfinished eighth wicket to bring Mumbai within sight of the Karnataka total.

Besides Sharath, young leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal took three wickets to keep Mumbai in check.
