Day 5: First Test between India, SA ends in a draw

Johannesburg, Dec 22 : South Africa came closer to victory while India failed to pick up three more wickets as both the nations presented a gutsy day of cricket which ended the first Test at t New Wanderers Stadium in a draw here on Sunday.


Chasing 458 for victory, South Africa managed to score 450 for seven in the second innings.

Faf du Plessis played e memorable knock of 134 runs which will be remembered by crickets fans across the world for the fight he put up against Indians and nearly took the match away from the
Indians and ensured the match ended in a draw, if not a win.

The match went away from India as AB de Villiers (103) and Plessis added 205 runs in the fifth wicket partnership.

Vernon Philander (25*) and Plessis also kept hopes alive for the home side till Plessis got run out in the 133rd over.

Steyn and Philander changed the strategy since that point and ensured the Test ended in a draw.

Mohammed Shami picked up three wickets for India.

South Africa had resumed the day's play at 138 for 2.

South Africa bowled out India for 421 runs on Saturday as the visitors posted 458 for victory.

Cheteshwar Pujara played yet another promising knock of 153 runs. He smashed 21 boundaries in his innings. Kohli missed his century by four runs and was dismissed at 96 by JP Duminy.

The visitors had scored 280 all out in their first innings before dismissing the home side for 244.

Indian skipper MS Dhoni said the fast bowlers have deliever int he match.

Praising batsmen for their performances, he said: " Our batting did extremely well too."

Virat Kohli was adjudged Man of the Match for his 119 and 96 runs.

Kohli said: " A hundred in both innings would have been perfect, but I was happy with 96."
