Corruption is unacceptable: Rahul

New Delhi, Dec 22 : Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday termed corruption as the biggest issue plaguing India and said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government has taken unprecedented steps to combat it.

Speaking at the valedictory session of the annual general meeting of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in New Delhi on Saturday, Gandhi sought to sell the new hardline anti-corruption stance of the party ahead of 2014 polls.

"The biggest issue is corruption. It is bleeding people. It is unacceptable." He said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government has faced a lot of criticism, "but it has done more to combat corruption than any other government," he said.

"We have ensured convicted MPs are kept out of Parliament. We have made sure recently that criminals are kept outside the parties," he said.

The Congress vice president said that the spiralling inflation and poverty remained two crucial challenges facing the government today.

"Poverty cannot be fought without growth. In 10 years, almost a third of Indian population has risen out of poverty," he said.
