Devyani Khobragade named in Adarsh scam

Mumbai, Dec 21 : Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade are among the beneficiaries in the Adarsh Housing Society scam, media reports said Friday citing a judicial panel report.

Following its investigations, the judicial commission found 25 of the society's 102 members ineligible and 22 cases of benami purchase of flats.

Among the ineligible beneficiaries are politicians across the spectrum and their relatives.

Indian diplomat in the U.S. Devyani Khobragade, whose arrest in New York in a visa fraud case taken ties between the countries to a new low, is also among them.

The Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly on Friday walked out of the house after the Adarsh housing scam report was not tabled in the House and the finding of a judicial commission appointed to probe the same was rejected by the cabinet.

The Maharashtra Cabinet has rejected the Adarsh Commission report on the defence housing scam.

The tabling of the report was not listed in the day's agenda, prompting the angry Opposition to walk out. Friday was the last day of the winter session of the state assembly.

The Opposition Shiv Sena said the government is trying to evade the discussion on the report since their own [former] chief minister Ashok Chavan is involved in it.

The CBI had chargesheeted 13 in the scam, including Ashok Chavan, but this week Maharashtra governor K Sankarnarayanan denied the federal investigating agency any permission to prosecute him.

Adarsh, the 30-storey apartment building , housing many top level defence officials, was built on a disputed army land at Colaba in Mumbai and it is alleged that the flats meant for the families of the Kargil martyrs were allotted to top defence officials and kins of politicians.
