India should play extra batsman: Sunil Gavaskar

Johannesburg, Dec 17 : Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar on Tuesday said India should play an extra batsman in the first Test against South Africa which starts on Wednesday.

"After the batting failure in the ODIs, I will go with an extra batsman with Rahane in the first Test," Gavaskar told NDTV.

Gavaskar said he feels that senior pacer Zaheer Khan's inclusion in the Indian Test team will help the side.

"This Indian team learns fast. They have the batting depth, just needs a bit of patience. Zaheer's inclusion will help," Gavaskar said.

The first Test between India and South Africa will start on Wednesday.

South Africa won the One Day International (ODI) series against the visitors 2-0.

This is the first Test match India will play following the retirement of Indian batting icon Sachin Tendulkar.
