GKSF champions Kerala's traditional crafts
Exquisite wood and metal works, handlooms that are at once ethnic and trendy, and handicrafts made by skilled village artisans have been added to the prize pot of the South Indian Bank Grand Kerala Shopping Festival (GKSF) for the first time.
Kerala's craftsmen have pride of place in GKSF Season 6 as their creations are showcased to the world in special pavilions at the spectacular Global Village coming up in Kochi and in eight thematic exhibitions that will be held during the festival period from December 15, 2012 to January 31, 2013, GKSF Director U V Jose said in a press release here today.
GKSF plans to source these locally-made items from state-owned agencies and co-operatives such as Handicrafts Development Corporation, Surabhi, Hantex and Kudumbasree ensuring that the large numbers of artisans under their umbrella are among the gainers from the festival.
"We have decided this time to offer GKSF merchandise instead of discount coupons as prizes. It will go a long way in promoting our state's indigenous products and our craftsmen, particularly as we work towards launching shopping tourism in Kerala," Jose said.
Visitors arriving during the peak tourist season and Sabarimala pilgrims should find the special gifts an attractive addition to their shopping experience.
