A police memorial will be built atop Malemahadeshwara hill to remember the police who sacrificed their lives during the operation to capture forest brigand Veerappan.

Former Karnataka DG and IGP Shankara Bidari, who had headed operation against the forest brigand Veerappan, told scribes here that a trust to assist the police families will also be formed in the memory of those who sacrificed their lives, he opined.

Mr Bidari, who was here to inaugurate the annual meeting of the Retired Police Offcials Association, said the trust will be formed by him with the help of his colleagues.

He urged the central government to provide the status of army personnel to the police personnel and provide them the same facilities as policing was becoming challenging in the present circumstances.

Mr Bidari donated Rs one lakh to the Association in the name of his body guard, Manavattira Ponnanna who died during the STF operation. Recalling the incident, he said a gun shot at him hit Ponnanna during the operation killing him on the spot. "Since Ponnanna gave me re-birth, I am donating this money to the Association," he said.
