Jaya's pat for fishermen for saving beached ship crew
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today hailed the brave act of fishermen for rescuing the crew of the Oil Tanker 'Prathiba Cauvery' which ran aground during Cyclone Nilam that crossed the coast on October 31 and announced an award of Rs 1 lakh to each of them.
In a statement here, she said 25 members of the Mumbai-based vessel took the life boat in a bid to reach the shore, when it capsized.
On seeing them struggle in the waters, five young fishermen--Gopi, Vadivelu, Kalaimani, Udayamurthy and Madan--used their presence of mind, took a boat from the shore and rescued the crew by risking their lives.
Braving the gusty winds and the rain, they entered the sea and saved them, Ms Jayalalithaa said.
Lauding their selfless service and brave acts, Ms Jayalalithaa announced a special award of Rs 1 lakh each to the five fishermen in recognition of their role in saving the crew.
