The opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President N Chandrababu Naidu today requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to declare the floods caused by the recent cyclone Nilam in Andhra Pradesh as a national calamity and extend full support to the state.
In a letter to Dr Singh with a copy marked to Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, the TDP chief said, "I also request you to send the Disaster Management team of the National Disaster management Authority to assist the state government to restore normalcy and take steps for revival of agriculture, aquaculture, horticulture and other livelihoods." Mr Naidu urged the Prime Minister to direct the other departments like Railways, Telecom, national Highway Authorities to restore all the effected communications on a war footing basis as the rehabilitation work cannot progress without proper communications.
He said the state has been badly hit by the cyclone and the heavy rains and added as per the preliminary assessment, huge damage to life and properties in at least ten districts was reported with at least 50 deaths reported, 68,000 people taking shelter in relief camps, 14 lakh acres crops damaged, 6,896 houses fully damaged, 1,286 minor irrigation sources breached/damaged, Four per cent of the lift irrigation schemes, 44 Medium Irrigation Projects and 427 of drinking water sources had been affected and 225 villages did not have power supply.
