Automobile company General Motors (GM) India on Monday launched the all-new Chevrolet Sail U-VA, a premium hatchback, to cash in on the Diwali boom.
"The much anticipated Chevrolet Sail U-VA hatchback is an important addition to GM's small car portfolio in India. It brings a new sense of vitality to the largest, fast growing and most competitive segment in the domestic passenger car market," said President and Managing Director of GM India, Lowell Paddock.
The new Sail U-VA hatchback is available in both petrol and diesel Smartech engines.
In the diesel section, a four cylinder engine delivers power of 78 PS at 4,000 RPM and torque of 205 NM at 1,750+/-50 RPM along with fuel economy of 22.1 km/l with several technical up-gradation in features like aluminium alloy DOHC cylinder head, lightweight pistons with graphite coated skirts that have anti-friction properties, low-tension piston rings that decrease weight, torsional vibration dampers to provide improved noise, vibration and harshness as well as low-inertia valvetrain with hydraulic lash adjusters and a lifetime maintenance-free timing chain.
"The engine's advanced common rail fuel injection system, close-coupled diesel oxidation catalyst, and electrically operated, water-cooled external EGR with pneumatically controlled EGR bypass effectively less limit emissions along with a fixed-geometry turbocharger with vacuum-operated waste gate for smooth and efficient operations," said Vice President, VSSM, GM, Ashwani Muppasani.
In the petrol section, Sail U-VA hatchbacks offer 1.2-litre Smartech petrol engine with aluminium cylinder heads, a deep skirt cylinder block with an epoxy coating and anti-corrosion coating on cam cover baffles along with the use of stainless steel core plugs, bay-to-bay ventilation, and lightweight pistons.
The cars are available in seven colours like super red, switchblade silver, summit white, caviar black, linen beige, sandrift grey and misty lake.
Officials informed, "The company has ensured that the exterior of the cars offer a sporty style with Chevrolet's design cues, including a dual-port grille adorned with a gold bowtie, muscular cutlines providing a three dimensional appearance, Hawk Wing Style headlamps and Shooting Star style front fog lamps."
The body proportions offer a perfect ratio of a long front and short rear with a lower stance in front that moves upward to a higher stance in the back.
"The panoramic view, big side windows and wide opening rear door give it the feel of a much larger car. We have put the fuel tank of the car underneath, that is under the seats and is centrally placed to provide a lot of space," asserted Muppasani.
GM has also payed much of attention to the interior styling, with a Chevrolet Corvette-inspired dual-cockpit design, horizon view dashboard design and rising sun styled instrument cluster with a three-spoke V-style steering wheel add to the sporty feel.
"The Sail U-VA hatchbacks are manufactured to cater to service the young couples and families as well as to load and unload cargoes. Therefore we ensured that ample space is being provided to give room for up to five passengers, along with the smartly designed Flex Flat folding rear seat which increases the space in the back to 1,134 litres," added Muppasani.
To add to the peppiness, Bluetooth functionality has been provided which supports five pairings, and audio streaming.
The company has also ensured taut and right handling with gas-filled front, rear shock absorbers to optimize damping in order to isolate road undulations, reduction in fatigue prone vibration, Macpherson struts in front and a semi-independent suspension in back along with a rigid chassis work to maximize ride quality, said GM, Vice President, Corporate Affairs, P Balendran.
Coming to safety, Chevrolet has used extensive use of high-strength steel, three point structure to disperse 80pc of the force impact, front and rear bumper skins to absorb light-impact energy at low speeds of up to 4 km/h to minimize body damage while the fuel tank is protected by steel beam-rolling ribs.
"Engine immobiliser, central door locking , speed sensitive automatic door locks and remote keyless entry further enhance active safety. We also ensured the driver's safety with airbags in three-four variants while brakeforce distribution is available in top two variants," added Balendran.
