The rupee tumbled today by 80 paise to 54.61, a one-and-a-half-month low, following rising demand for the greenback from banks and importers, dealers at the Interbank Foreign Exchange said.
The local unit depreciated by 33 paise in the opening session.
Till the end of the session, it dropped by 83 paise to 54.64, before closing at 54.61, down by 80 paise as compared to its last close.
The rupee registered the day's high and low at 54.64 and 54.00 per USD, respectively.
The Indian currency tumbled today following strong Dollar overseas against other world currencies, the dealers added.
