Police have busted a wild animals trading racket with the arrest of two people and seizure of a rare chameleon from their possession.
Baripada DFO Bijay Kumar Panda today said Sushanta Mishra of Kharagpur and Padmalochan Mohanta of Badasahi near here were arrested for their involvement in the trading of the rare chameleon listed in scheduled-II of the Wild life Protection Act 1972.
Mr Panda said acting on a tip-off that Padmalochan was trying to sell the chameleon to a Kharagpur based trader Sushant for Rs five lakh, the forest officials arrested both the accused and seized the 40 cm long animal from their possession.
The chameleon was later released in its forest habitat in Simlipal today.
