Tension prevailed at Thirukkanur as a section of the public picketed the primary health centre in the area this morning.
According to police, Sumathi (38) of Mannadipet was brought to the Primary Health Centre last night with fever and the doctor who examined her asked her relatives to shift her to the Government General Hospital.
The doctor called the ambulance driver who refused to come to the centre. Even though, the relatives of Sumathi went to the residence of the driver and pleaded with him, he failed to come to the hospital.
Later, her relatives rang up 108 Ambulance service stationed at Katterikuppam. However, the driver informed that he was taking a patient to the Government Hospital and will reach Thirukkanur after getting her admitted there.
The ambulance reached Thirukkanur after one hour and Sumathi was taken to the Government Hospital. But she died on the way.
Irate over this, her relatives and the public picketed the Primary Health Centre demanding that the ambulance driver be dismissed.Senior police and helath officials held talks with them and assured to initiate proper action against the driver, following which they called off their agitation.
