Karva Chauth was celebrated in various jails across Punjab, with the state administration making special arragements for women inmates to perform rituals related with this festival yesterday.
Stating this here today, Punjab Jails Minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur said women inmates were allowed to perform the rituals, including Katha, inside the jail premises and special food arrangements made for them.
"Across all jails, there have been a good number of husbands who have visited their wives lodged in jails to help them complete their fast," he said.
"We intend to help women who are behind the bars. Our aim is to change the notion that jail inmates can only be punished," Mr Phillaur said.
The move, he said, was one of the several initiatives that the government had taken to make jail inmates good citizens during their stay behind bars. "We have been and will be organising special camps and activities in all the jails," he added.
