Samba Paddy crops in about 200 acres were fully damaged as a pipeline carrying crude for refinery developed cracks resulting in oil spill over the fields.
The oil spill was noticed by the people of Ananimangalam, Manjavadi and its surrounding villages of Nagapattinam district.
The paddy farmers, who had not gone to field during the past three days due to cyclone Nilam, were shocked to see oil leakage in their fields.
In a statement here today, General Secretary of Cauveri Delta Farmers Protection Association Dhanabalan said it would not be possible to raise any crop for the next three years in field and urged Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and other public sector oil companies authorities to provide at least Rs 25,000 per acre as compensation to the affected farmers.
