About 100 mediapersons, representing various organisations and associations, today staged a demonstration in front of the DMDK Headquarters in the city.

The agitation was to condemn DMDK Founder and Leader of the Opposition Vijyakanth's recent abuse of a journalist at the airport here on Bakrid day.

Mr Vijayakanth, who felt uncomfortable when media posed questions about dissidence in his party and lost cool, allegedly abused the journalist while he was proceeding to Madurai.

He also asked why he should speak and whether he was getting salary from them.

In the melee, the journalist was also allegedly pushed by Vijayakanth's aide and Chengalpattu MLA Anagai Murugesan, who was arrested by the police and later released by a court on conditional bail.

Various media organisations condemned the act of the DMDK Founder and decided to stage a demonstration in front of his office at Koyambedu in the city. As more than 100 media people assembled there, police prevented them from entering the office. The agitators were led by Chennai Press Club Joint Secretary Bharathi Tamizhan, who said the demonstration was to condemn his remarks and also to 'pay the salary to Vijayakanth'.

The journos, displaying a Rs 100 note in their hands, shouted slogans before they were asked to disperse by the police.

Soon after the incident on October 27, the journolist, who was pushed by Murugesan, lodged a complaint following which cases were registered against two people, including Mr Vijayakanth.

Fearing arrest, Mr Vijayakanth filed an anticipatory bail plea and a court granted him conditional bail.
