Sam Pitroda, Adviser to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, on Friday said that the government's drive to provide broadband connectivity to 2.5 lakh panchayats across the country will be completed in the next 18 months.
In a press conference via microblogging site Twitter, Pitroda said that government envisions panchayats as hubs for service delivery to citizens when broadband comes in.
The rural broadband network will be the first step towards bridging the gap between rural and urban India, he said.
Talking about the Global Innovation Roundtable 2012 conference, the occasion for the interaction, he said the aim of the several workshops being organised is to simplify the procedure of PCs, mobiles and televisions to children.
