The police have registered a criminal case against an Ahmedabad-based travel agent for allegedly cheating 33 Haj pilgrims from Mahi and nearby villages in Vadgam taluka of Banaskantha district of over Rs 66 lakhs.
Among the victims are many poor farmers who lost their hard earned savings.
In a police complaint, lodged by one Mehbub Yasin Mardiya, and 18 others with Chappi police station the travel agent, Nasir Husain Abdul Karim Shaikh, had charged Rs two lakh per head totaling Rs 66 lakh, in addition to other extra charges collected for boarding and lodging, police said.
Acting on the complaint, a police team raided the agent's office but he had already made good his escape. The accused not only collected Rs two lakh per head but also the passports of all 33 people on May 24 this year to make reservation for the Haj pilgrimage, the sources added.
