The soldiers at different army stations in Rajasthan today recalled the might and gallant action demonstrated by troops of the first battalion of the Sikh regiment in Srinagar on this day in 1947 in their task of dispelling Pakistan army from Kashmir.

On October 27, 1947, in response to the first threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India, the elements of the first battalion of the Sikh Regiment Indian Infantry landed in Srinagar and resolutely defended Kashmir from falling into the enemy hands.

These valiant Indian soldiers fought a gallant action reversing the tide of the battle thus saving Kashmir from the clutches of Pakistan.

To commemorate this exemplary historic and heroic deed of the Infantry in the nascent stage of Independence, the army celebrates this day as Infantry Day every year.

The programme in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Kota, Alwar and Ganganagar started on a sombre note with the senior most Infantry Officer laying a wreath along with other serving and retired Infantry Officers at their respective Military stations.

Two-minute silence was also observed as mark of respect to soldiers who had made the supreme sacrifice for the nation.
