Twenty nine Indians found guilty on various criminal charges, mostly murder, have been awarded death sentence during the last five years in various countries, the Ministry of External Affairs said today.
In reply to a query under the Right to Information Act by Om Prakash Sharma, a senior BJP leader who is also a former National Council member, the Ministry stated that 10,647 Indians had been convicted in various countries for criminal offences and imprisoned.
The Ministry stated that 21 Indians had been awarded death sentence in UAE, six in Kuwait and one each in Indonesia and Iran.
The offences for which they were awarded death penalty include murder which accounts for the maximum of 27 cases.
One each had been sentenced to death for narcotics and drugging the MEA stated.
The MEA further stated that a total of 10,647 persons had been convictead and jailed in the various countries which includes the 29 awarded death penalty.
The UAE has 4315 convicts, Bangladesh 2008, Kuwait 1161, China 673, Oman 429, UK 426 and the rest have less than 250, the MEA said.
