A whopping majority of people in the UAE - 99 percent - are aware of the dangers of driving without a seat-belt, according to a national driving survey.

The 999 magazine, the official English monthly of the interior ministry, polled 1,350 respondents across the country, and found that 99 percent of respondents know the risks of travelling without strapping on the seat-belt.

Among the top 10 road safety problems, not wearing a seat-belt and not using proper child seats are ranked No.6 and No.9 respectively.

The UAE's federal traffic law requires front-seat passengers to wear seat-belts, failing which people have to pay a fine of 400 dirhams.

The poll also found that 22 percent of respondents felt the chances of being stopped if travelling with an unrestrained child were highly likely, while an equal number thought of it as unlikely.
