Goa hails SC's decision on illegal mining
Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar Friday stated that the Supreme Court's verdict banning all mining activities and transportation of ore vindicates the state government's decision.
"The Supreme Court has reiterated the decision I took weeks back. Our decision may not have been brought to the Court though," Parrikar told reporters reacting to the verdict Friday evening.
He said that the Supreme Court's decision was without hearing the state government and that the latter has not been informed about filing reply or affidavit before it.
The Court also asked the Central Empowered Committee to submit the report on illegal mining in the state within four weeks.
Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) welcomed the decision. Congress' spokesman Jitendra Deshprabhu said they respect the Court's order and that it will bring out the truth.
NCP's Surendra Sirsat said, "We are happy with the decision of the Court. All those involved in the illegal practice should be brought to book."
