Karuna's indirect dig at Centre on Rajapakse's recent visit
Having an indirect dig at the Centre on extending a red carpet welcome to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse during his visit to India last month, DMK President M Karunanidhi today said one could not expect the determination to break the protocol from everyone.
Addressing a press conference after chairing a meeting of the recently-revived Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO) here, as per protocol a country extends a red carpet welcome to a visiting dignitary and also hosts a dinner.
"You (the media) are asking whether the Centre has the determination to break the protocol", he said, adding, the determination to break the protocol could not be expected from every one.
Mr Karunanidhi stoutly opposed the recent visit of the Lankan President to Madhya Pradesh for a function and wanted the Centre to take steps to cancel it as his visit coincides with a team from UN Human Rights Commission expecting to visit Lanka to look into the allegations of human rights violations indulged in by Lanka during the final stages of war.
Mr Karunanidi also reminded that as the Chief Minister of the State, he had boycotted the reception organised to welcome the Indian Peacekeeping Force (IPKF) on their return from Sri Lanka for their alleged involvement in the killing of innocent Tamils.
