The Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) University and the Pune-based Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) today entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to initiate a doctoral degree programme to promote world class research in automotive engineering and related disciplines, The MoU was signed by VIT Varisty Chancellor Dr G Viswanathan, and ARAI Director Shrikant R Marathe.
Under the pact, engineering practitioners and the scholars could carry out their research work either at VIT or ARAI depending upon the topic chosen by them.
"Industry sponsored candidates will also be admitted to this programme. Research in the areas of newer materials, alternate energy sources, power train, engine, emission control, new manufacturing techniques and Mechatronics will be taken up", a VIT release here said.
The doctoral scholars would be jointly guided by the VIT faculty and senior Engineers of ARAI.
The VIT University and ARAI are already offering joint BTech. and MTech programmes in Automotive Engineering.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Viswanathan said collaborative efforts between industry, education and government was vital for the growth of India's economy and industry.
