Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court today stayed the student union elections of Lucknow University (LU) till October 17.
The elections of student union elections were to be held on October 15 and the nomination process has already started.
A division bench of the court comprising Justices Uma Nath Singh and V K Dixit stayed the student union elections of Lucknow University following a petition by a student Hemant Singh.
The petitioner alleged that the LU elections were not being held as per the Lyngdoh Committee recommendation which is a clear violation of the election process. The Lyngdoh Committee has recommended that the age eligibility of the contesting candidates should be counted from the new academic session, but LU has violated and was counting the date of birth from the day of start of the nominations process.
Besides, the petitioner also pleaded that the Lyngdoh Committee had also recommended that the elections should be held within 8 weeks of the start of a new academic session, which was also being violated.
The court has fixed October 17 as the next date of hearing after seeking reply from the University and the Uttar Pradesh government on the matter.
