Bhupathi-Bopanna banned for two years
India's doubles specialists Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna have been handed a two-year ban by the All India Tennis Association (AITA) for their rebellion against the federation during the 2012 London Olympics.
Bhupathi and Bopanna defied AITA's decision of pairing them with Leander Paes ahead of the Games. Bhupathi and Bopanna held the AITA to ransom and finally managed to have their way.
But the AITA also struck back hard leaving them out for this Davis Cup ties and on Saturday said that they will stick with the young team for the next two years.
"It is ... decided not to consider Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna for selection to play for India until June 30, 2014," AITA Secretary Bharat Oza said in a statement late Saturday.
The AITA has decided to retain the current Davis Cup squad, which does not include Paes, for next year's Asia/Oceania group matches.
After regular pair Bhupathi-Bopanna refused to be separated for the London Games, the AITA decided to pair Paes with Vardhan and indicated action would be taken against Bhupathi and Bopanna.
