Assam: ULFA cadre killed in gun battle

A hardcore cadre from anti-talk faction group of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) was killed on Monday in a gun battle with security forces at Assam's Goalpara district along Assam-Meghalaya border, police said.

Acting on a tip-off a joint team of police and CRPF launched a search operation at Khardang area near Rongjuli in the district along Assam-Meghalaya border in the wee hours of Monday, where a militant group was hiding.

"When we reached the area, the militants fired and bullets were exchanged, in which a hardcore cadre of the outfit group was killed," a top police official said.

The deceased militant was identified as Mahat Rabha alias Rohit Rabha.

Security forces recovered one carbine and 10 rounds of live ammunition from his possession.

"Mahat was one of mastermind of attacked on CRPF convoy in Goalpara district," a police official said.

Paresh Asom alias Paresh Baruah led anti-talk faction group of ULFA had set up several camps along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

Meanwhile, Assam police had been getting some important clues about the explosion at Paltan Bazar area in Guwahati city on Sept 8 evening.

A top official of Assam police said that, ULFA and Manipur based militant group People's Liberation Army (PLA) have planned to triggered explosion in Guwahati and other areas of Assam.

Assam police had sounded high alert across the state after getting inputs from Intelligence Bureau (IB).
